Hi! Welcome to my newsletter. I am excited to share this new chapter with you. For those who found themselves here and don’t know what CortDoesScience is all about - My name is Cortney Gensemer (AKA Dr. Gensemer, Cortney, Cort, Dr. G). I’m a postdoctoral scholar with a PhD in biomedical sciences studying the Ehlers Danlos Syndromes and related co-morbidities (such as MCAS and POTS). I also happen to live with these things myself. Between my personal experience and professional expertise, I’ve found that I am able to fill a gap in the patient community, providing lay-friendly resources and updates to those who want to understand more about what’s going on with their body and what’s going on in the research world.
I started my instragram account @CortDoesScience in 2021 to share EDS resources and provide educational materials. This newsletter is a chance for me to share that same science and "life" with you!
The newsletter will include:
1. Weekly Summaries of Social Media Content.
I regularly post informative graphics and summaries on complex topics related to EDS, MCAS, POTS, ME/CFS and other chronic illnesses on social media. One of the biggest things I hear is that people either don’t use Instagram and Facebook, or even if they do, they miss my posts altogether. Through my newsletter, I’ll be sending out the exact same content just delivered to your email inbox instead (for free)!
2. Weekly lists of new publications in the field, along with a short summary of their significance.
There are a lot of new papers coming out in this field every week. Sometimes, these can be exciting scientific advances that impact research; other times it will include things like new research or clinical discoveries related to these complex chronic illnesses. For subscribers, I will share weekly updates of new research in the field, including links to articles and a lay summary “so what” description for those who just want to know why it matters!
3. Blog Posts - more of me!
What is it actually like being a scientist with a chronic illness? How the heck do I manage my health with my super busy life? What are my tips and tricks (and fails)? I’ve wanted to share more of my life with you, whether it’s what kind of belted leash I use to walk my dog and give my shoulders a break or how I try to navigate the ups and downs of health scares and the anxiety that comes with it. Sometimes, this might help with that “I’m not alone” feeling, and at the very least, maybe you can laugh along with me as I try to figure out life.
